Current Status of Concentrator Photovoltaic (CPV) Technology

CPV is the most typical representative of concentrated solar power generation technology. The converged photovoltaic cells with high conversion efficiency are directly converted into electric energy.

CPV system, especially HCPV system with high rate of concentration, should reflect the advantages of conversion efficiency relative to crystalline silicon and thin film technology, and have higher requirements for solar lighting conditions in the construction area. Generally speaking, CPV is suitable for construction in areas with long direct sunlight time, because diffuse sunlight in cloudy weather and cloudy environment cannot be effectively concentrated. According to the current understanding, the technical characteristics of CPV require that the annual solar radiation intensity of its installation site reach 1800kwh / m ² As mentioned above, the regions that meet this condition in the world mainly include the southwest of the United States, southern Europe represented by Mediterranean coastal countries such as Spain, northern and southern Africa, the Middle East and Australia. Some regions in Northwest China also have better natural conditions for the construction of CPV system.

The solar tracking module used in CPV system is usually a set of dual axis tracking system to ensure that the sunlight is always perpendicular to the condensing system. Its structure is mainly composed of metal support and control driving mechanism. For large-scale CPV power plants, the whole power plant can share a set of sensing system, which sends a unified action command of the driving mechanism to control all CPV modules in the power plant in the correct direction. To put CPV system into large-scale deployment, an effective and reproducible high-precision solar tracking system is an essential part, and it is also an important symbol to measure the maturity and reliability of CPV technology.

At present, the installed capacity of CPV in the world is less than 200MW. It is expected that in the next few years, with the embodiment of technical and cost advantages, the market scale will increase explosively, and the average annual growth rate in the next 10 years is expected to be more than 40%. At present, there are only a few demonstration power stations in China. In the future, with the increase of photovoltaic installed capacity, the CPV market will gradually open.
